Behind The Design: Q&A with Rebecca Hay
Sophistication and comfort are combined in this master bedroom designed by Rebecca Hay. Learn how she created a warm and inviting space by combining blue and green colors into the design in this behind the scenes Q & A.
What were your clients’ needs for this space?
This master suite was designed to be a restful retreat for my clients to relax. They wanted it to be sophisticated but also cozy.
Were there any challenges designing this space?
The windows are an awkward shape and because it’s a condo building we weren’t able to change them. We decided to treat them as one large window and hang drapery panels to create the illusion of one large window. The white sheers close all the way hiding the awkward shape and provide privacy.
Do you have any special considerations or requirements when creating a bedroom?
It’s important to me that my clients feel comfortable and spoiled. Bedrooms are often overlooked as they are not visible to house guests. I believe a bedroom should be treated as just as important as any other room. It should inspire you to start your day while also calm you at bedtime. Custom headboards, quality bed sheets and great lighting all help to achieve this.
How does the flooring play into your design?
The flooring here was an integral part of making this space cozy and inviting. While we installed hardwood floors throughout the rest of their home, here we opted for plush wool carpet. It’s soft underfoot and adds so much warmth.
Why did you choose these colors?
The drapery fabric was our inspiration for this room. It’s soft and serene and compliments the beautiful green trees outside the window. Greens and blues are great GO-TO colors for bedrooms. They are calm and restful while also being fresh.
What is your favorite aspect of this room?
The romantic chandelier hanging above the bed. It adds a soft romantic feeling to the space.
What did your client like the most?
The little sitting area where they can enjoy reading a book or conversation over cocktails in privacy. These chairs were re-purposed from the client's’ previous home. We recovered them in a complimentary soft fabric to suit the new space.
